About Shab Radio

How Shab Radio Started

Shab Radio started as a concept for Sam Agyei-Mante as far back as 1995. The two main aims of the concept is to 1) review and play albums in their entirety and 2) to broadcast without the DJ being the voice of the music.  With the emergence of smooth Jazz as a genre, many commercial jazz stations tend to play the "best" or the most popular tracks on the album of an artiste to promote their album.

Shab Radio plays full content of an artiste. This gives you, the music fan, the chance to hear an album in its entirety.

"But isn't that what Spotify or Deezer does?" To an extent, yes, however what Shab Radio does is give you the chance to hear albums that streaming services may drop because the album may not be as popular now as it was 20 years ago. For example, pick any Jazz artiste you know of, and you will be pushed to find their full body of work on any streaming service.

What we do on Shab Radio is to review as many of the full albums we play, including personnel and context.

Our second aim is to play all the music without a DJ continually talking over the music you're listening to, cutting it short to allow for news or some smart chat. Shab Radio believes that the best voice the DJ can have is that of the musician they are playing or representing.

Our Programming

  • 10:00 pm Tuesdays - 18 Tunes or More (repeated the following weekday at 9:00 am)
  • Cover to Cover wherefull albums are continually streamed between other programmes;
  • Full Album Reviews
  • 18 Tunes or More (usually to fill in the time between Full Album Reviews and Late Nite Smoove

Our Top Shows

There are currently 3 popular shows

  • Album reviews, where we play an album in its entirety, accompanied by a full written review;
  • Cover to Cover where full albums are continually streamed in their entirety between other programmes;
  • 18 Tunes or More: 18 Tunes Or More is usually a mix of 18 selected tunes which are usually played at intervals, between programming. Why 18? Well, because that was as many tunes that could fit on a 90 Minute tape, back in the day.
